PVA Sponge Peel Off

Getting the PVA sponge adheres on PVC surface.  Selecting the appropriate glue to adhere PVA sponge against a PVC surface is a challenging job.  DST has many years experience in PVA sponge manufacturing and adhesion application.  Over here, we would like to summarize a few points for our reader to consider while come to glue selection.

PVA Sponge Material Characteristic

Apart from the standard PVA sponge material characteristic, we have to consider “surface tension” while comes to glue selection.  In general, PVA sponge is a low surface tension material so that many of the glue may not be suitable.

In this case, most of the PVA sponge roller manufacturers are selecting Epoxy base glue material to adhere PVA sponge roller with PVC surface.

PVC Surface Treatment

PVC material is a petroleum base product.  Reader could examine a thin film of “oily” surface on the cover throughout the PVC surface.  Because of the thin film, it makes the glue even challenging to adhere on the surface.

In order to improve the adhesion force, manufacturer has to perform some simple surface treatment on the PVC surface so that it helps the glue to trap PVA sponge with the PVC surface.

Peeling force of PVA Sponge

PVA sponge tend to retract while the sponge getting dry.  The retraction force could become a problem and cause the PVA sponge peel off from the PVC surface.  From our internal study, we believe the peeling force is one of the major contributions for reducing the adhesion force.

How to Examine the Adhesion Result?

After applying the glue between PVA sponge roller and PVC material, we have to examine the adhesion result.

• Secure adhesion. If adhesion is secure, user will notice the PVA sponge is securely attached on the PVC surface without any peel off.
• Detach. Once found detach, manufacturer has to scrutiny observe the peel off surface.  Observe the peel off happen at PVA sponge side or PVC surface.  An experience manufacturer will identify the root cause after observing the glue location.
