How to Calculate Porosity Ratio for PVA Sponge Roller?

Porous structure is the common structure for sponge product, perhaps porous structure also one of the important characteristic for PVA sponge.  Porosity is the basic properties of any sponge, this include PVA sponge roller.

In most of the application, engineer need to understand the porosity ratio for any sponge roller in order to have the first impression for the sponge they are using.

Measure and calculate the porosity for PVA sponge roller is pretty straightforward, we could calculate the porosity for any sponge roller with only use weight balancer.

With the porosity data, field engineer could get the first hand information regarding the porous structure about the sponge roller, however for detail study of porous structure, such as pore size and pore uniformity, field engineer should carry out cross section magnification study on the exact pore size and distribution.

SEM is the commonly use equipment for inspecting cross section of pore size.

Porosity Calculation Procedure:

1.      Measure the weight for a specific PVA sponge roller, A.

2.      Soak the PVA sponge roller in the water for full soaking; leave the roller from the water tank without squeezing the roller.

3.      Wait until no more water drop off from the PVA roller, measure the PVA roller with water, B.

4.      By PVA (Polyvinyl Alcohol) material characteristic, the PVA density is 1.19 – 1.3g/cm3, Dpva.

In most case, the PVA roller porosity is maintaining within the range of 85% – 95%.  A lower porosity ratio could be interpreted the porous structure is lesser compare to higher porosity. However porosity could not be the only criteria judging the porous structure for a PVA sponge roller, the uniformity of pore size are another important criteria.

Porosity is directly affected by the PVA  sponge roller foaming process.  A reliable foaming mechanism and process will definitely maintain the porosity ratio and also uniformity of pore size.
